Why Lakou Exists

The Haitian community is one of the most entrepreneurial, resilient, and globally connected communities in the world. Yet finding one another has always been strangely hard. Our businesses, professionals, churches, and organizations were scattered across thousands of websites, social media groups, and word-of-mouth networks — real strength, hidden in fragments.

Every connection that never happened was strength left on the table: the customer who never found the business, the student who never found the scholarship, the two organizations that never realized they were working on the same problem.

Lakou exists to end that fragmentation — not by replacing what the community has built, but by making it discoverable and trustworthy.

The Name

In Haiti, the lakou is the shared courtyard at the center of family life — where generations lived together, knowledge was passed down, and no one stood entirely alone. The lakou was never just land. It was an institution of belonging.

The name was not chosen by us. It was suggested by a community member during our earliest research — which is fitting, because the community named its own courtyard.

The Community Is the Hero

Lakou is not the hero of this story. The Haitian community is.

The businesses were here before Lakou. The churches, the organizers, the professionals, the artists — all already here, already building. Lakou's job is deliberately humble: we are the courtyard, not the family. We are the map, not the territory.
